Market Impact: Russia/Ukraine How markets are reacting to the conflict and what it means for investors
15 Mar 2022

Everyone at Janus Henderson is deeply shocked and saddened by the Russian invasion of Ukraine and the unfolding humanitarian crisis. Whilst we do not have employees or offices in Ukraine or Russia and have very limited exposure to assets based in those countries, we are monitoring the situation closely and the information below outlines some of the steps we have taken from an investment, operations and risk, and humanitarian perspective.

Investment decisions

We have implemented a firmwide restriction to suspend additional direct investment in Russia* for the foreseeable future. Our Fund management teams are actively monitoring and assessing market conditions to understand options to further reduce our existing very limited exposure to Russia and Belarus, when market conditions permit. In addition our Risk team continues to monitor liquidity, performance and flows. Our priority is ensuring we make decisions that are in the best interests of our clients and mitigate unintended consequences.

Operations and risk activities

Janus Henderson has documented and tested processes in place for situations like this and teams from across our organisation have been working together for some time now to ensure that any potential disruption to our normal course of business for colleagues and clients is kept to a minimum and to ensure that all applicable sanctions imposed are implemented quickly. We have also taken measures to reinforce our information security processes and systems to continue to protect our clients’ assets.

Humanitarian relief

Janus Henderson cares deeply about helping those in need and through our established charitable giving programme, the Janus Henderson Foundation, we are matching all employee donations, pound for pound and dollar for dollar. The Foundation has also made a sizeable donation to the Disaster Emergency Committee (DEC) to support their humanitarian efforts. We are heartbroken by these dreadful events and our thoughts are with those whose lives have been destroyed by this deplorable act. *restricted investments include securities or pooled funds where Russia is identified as the primary country of risk.
