Deep learning: involves feeding a computer system a lot of data, which it can use to make decisions about other data. This data is fed through neural networks – logical constructions which ask a series of binary true/false questions, or extract a numerical value, from all the data which pass through them, and classify it according to the answers received.

How can GPUs be used to identify genetic diseases? Traditional methods of identifying genetic variants associated with a specific disease are long and tedious, requiring experts to comb through a person’s entire three billion base pairs of DNA to find the single change that causes disease. However, Stanford University School of Medicine proved that the use of GPU-enabled deep learning could reduce the diagnosis pipeline from six to eight weeks, to as little as 7.5 hours. When dealing with critically ill patients this time saving could be lifesaving, illustrating the potential for positive impact.
